While making lunch today, I got to thinking about compromises for this diet of mine. There’s been many that aren’t even rooted to this diet. Years ago Jim and I started eating healthier. No rhyme or reason to it, just eating healthier. We joined a gym. We got a trainer. Great huh? Yeah but we still smoked. Baby steps. We lost a lot of weight and managed to gain it all back (and then some) during our RV adventures.
I used to put 3-4 teaspoons of sugar in my coffee. I used to have coffee all day long. I switched to Splenda and cut out the evening coffee drinking. Splenda. Some may say it’s too artificial and maybe even chemically unhealthy. Better than sugar? I think so. Baby steps. Some might say why not just quit drinking coffee all together? Maybe I will some day. It took a while to get used to Splenda. Compromise. You will get used to it.
Veggie burgers. To me – mmmmmmm. I’m not replacing beef. I’m adding a new food group. I’ve mentioned it in other posts. Chicken, beef, veggie burgers, fish, pork. Food groups. Embrace. Compromise.
Mayo or absence thereof. I make a sandwich. Most of the time it’s just meat, lettuce, tomato and bread. Too dry? Not really. The lettuce and tomato provide moisture. Even if it were a little dry, is it worth the extra calories or points to smear mayo on it? I recently tried light mayo with a real low calorie count and it’s pretty good. Pretty good and not fantastic. Compromise. Now I can add some more flavor to my sandwich. Sometimes I use mustard. Mustard and turkey? Never had it. Next time I’ll give it a try.
I really don’t know where this came from. The fact that I had a “subject” and ran with it is quite frightening.
I went to a new dentist today. Now, if you’ll remember I’ve been experiencing many a dental problem lately. The latest was June 11th when I wrote “The $148 from Dr. Taylor’s office (mentioned here) should not be paid. As per an agreement between Esthetic Dental and Delta Dental, it was done within 3 months of the root planing and is considered “provider write-off”. She told me to refer the dentist to them if they have any questions.” What I didn’t tell you was that I emailed the dentist’s office and here’s what happened.
Click on it to enlarge the photo so you can read the emails between the doctor’s office and me.
Above: The exploded view of the offending part.
As you can see this is all from mid-June. I never posted anything about it because I’m not sure if Dr. Taylor reads the blog. I never told them about it but since I’ve linked to his website he may have reports that tell him so. I didn’t want to risk having problems getting x-rays or such. It’s all behind us now (I hope) and we’ll move forward.
Speaking of moving forward, fast forward to today. I just got home from the new dentist (University Dental Associates) office. He says one “temporary” filling is fine, nothing needed. The other should be replaced. No posts. No crowns. All seem well so far. I hope they’re not just telling me what they think I’d like to hear. We’ll see.

mmm veggie burgers
ReplyDeleteCan't believe that you don't seem to think a turkey sandwich with mustard is a natural thing, because it's GREAT.....just saying.
ReplyDeleteI fixed the email from the doctor. It was showing the same photo previously.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this post, Garret. You so get the whole diet thing. It is and always will be, from now until Kingdom Come, about compromise. Eat this and save, eat that and do 60 extra minutes of cardio. Trim here, splurge there. But the most important lesson of all is that the changes and compromises you make end up being good decisions and with time you will find you actually prefer the healthier food. I'm not a real mayo person, but occasionally I do like a smear on my sandwiches. Reduced fat is pretty good. And yes, absolutely mustard on turkey - but use the more genteel Dijon, the French will thank you and so will your tummy. I also love that you fully accept veggie and soy products as a class of their own, not in place of. If you're expecting soy crumbles to taste like ground beef, you'll be disappointed. BUT, if you throw them into a tomato sauce or a chili and give it a fair chance, you might just be surprised. Same with veggie burgers... NOT a replacement, not a substitute, but another option. An "add," not a subtract.
ReplyDeleteAnd I know I sound like a broken record, but it's all about the fiber. We need 40 grams a day. A little here and a little there add up, but a cup of Fiber One in the morning with a cup of raspberries gives you a whopping 36 grams in one fell swoop. Awesome! Get familiar with high fiber veggies and load up. They really do satisfy and keep you feeling fuller longer.
As long as you consider all these things as options and integrate them into your diet frequently, you'll be shocked how good you feel and how easy it is to make the transition.
I'm so so so so so proud of you my queen. Go Garret, go! You are an inspiration and a fabulous friend. I'm wild aboutcha.
I can't wait for Lisa to read this post. She'll flip over the unprofessionalism of Dr Taylor's office. How embarrassing for them. Ha! Serves them right.
XO
