5-24-09 Sunday (Hotel Check-In or Out or ?)

You guessed it, nothing to report from Saturday. Today was pretty laid back too. Last weekend we missed waffles at the clubhouse. We were up rather late Saturday night so Jim set his alarm to get up at a decent hour this morning. It worked, we got up, ate waffles, and then JIM went back to bed. Oh well. I spent the afternoon roasting in the hot tub. Well, without a pool, it’s the best I can do.

imageThe campground served hot dogs and side salads. We ate, socialized and then drove to Douglas to get our Walmart shopping done. Andy & Richard (camp hosts) had recommended seeing the historical Gadsden Hotel. We went in, looked around, snapped some photos and read some historical articles hanging around. The hotel has some ghost stories as well as an alleged story of Pancho Villa riding his horse up the steps during a gun fight.

Douglas borders Mexico. Our ghost tour guide last week had mentioned that this town has a 93% Mexican community from Agua Prieta. Douglas was created as a smelter town for Bisbee during the copper mining boom. We were very close to the border fence and found it interesting to see Mexican homes and such so close to the fence. The American side kept a fair buffer between homes and the fence.

We drove around the downtown area, and spotted “Cultural Crossroads” which seemed to be a dedication from locals, honoring the Mexico/American heritage mix.
