5-15-09 Friday (Catching Waves)

Amazingly enough, we’ve been on the road for 8 months so far. Generally, we have the same routine for travel and set up. Sure, it’s been tweaked along the way, but it’s been done so many times that we don’t even use our checklist. There’s 2 things we check at each stop - latch the coach door and latch the fridge. Today, we forgot about the fridge. Just a few miles down the road, BAM, the fridge door flew open, 3 containers of Crystal Lite fall to the floor, 2 are spewing iced tea all over the place. 4 bottles of Diet Coke plummet to the floor and roll around. I jump up and run to the back. The liquids are dumping out. I snatch the open containers up. During the turns and driving, the fluids are frolicking in waves on the floor. Damn, under the slide. Damn, down the hallway. I grab 4 beach towels and throw them at different waves…. was that a fish that swam by? No, it was a container of pineapples, in Gladware. Whoops!

Yesterday, we called a Walmart that would be on the way to Bisbee to make sure they could do an oil change on the RV. Some won’t do it, some will. The location in Casa Grande agreed to do it. We arrived, checked in with the lube center and pulled into the shop. They allowed us to sit in the RV and have lunch while they performed the oil change. This was pretty cool. This probably wins for strangest lunch location, and trust me, if you’ve been reading the blog since day 1, you’d know we’ve had some unusual and sometimes creepy lunch spots.

We had to stop at another Walmart as we neared Bisbee. The first one had zero Sam’s Choice Diet soda and didn’t have the cheap paper towels we like. Not happy. We bought plenty at the second Walmart and found the paper towels too. Yay!

We arrived at David’s Oasis. It’s “OK” but I’m not sure if we’ll be staying longer than planned. There’s a lot of wild animal warnings here so we were advised to carry a stick and keep the dog close. Great. We have met another couple tonight: Carl & Fred. We may sight see with them tomorrow. Who knows what time we’ll be up though, it’s now 1:30am. Oh and the view outside the windshield is cool. We can see Agua Prieta, Mexico and Douglas, AZ. The lights and mountains in the distance are pretty. The stars are beautiful. I’ve never seen so many! We gazed at them while in the hot tub. I saw 3 shooting stars. The sky is gorgeous and I’m tired!

  1. "The sky is gorgeous and I am tired". Somehow these two thoughts do not seem to go together in the same sentence(grin)....enjoy that hot tub!

  2. I love seeing shooting stars!

And the wild animal warning would totally freak me out... unless... are they referring to actual wild animals?? Or is it more of a "bear" warning?

  3. @Ken: Yeah, I know. That was me throwing my last thoughts out. Sigh.

@Liz: Jim and I couldn't remember the name of these pack animals similar to a boar (but not) with tusks or horns. I'll take a picture of the warning and then wiki it.

  4. Huh. I was surprised to read about the fridge door opening. I just had assumed that RV fridges had some sort of special latch so they didn't swing open on corners.

I also didn't know that you couldn't get the oil changed just anywhere, I figured an engine is an engine.

Your blog is educating me. :)

I am also currious as to the mystery wild life that is dangerous, yet could be chased off with a stick. That doesn't seem to compute to me.

  5. @Walk On: Ya know, newer refrigerators DO have self latching handles. You have to release it each time you open the fridge. Ours is from 1997, along with the rest of the RV. As for oil changes, some place just don't do 'em and others don't have high enough garage doors.
