It’s no surprise that sometimes our country can be a little, let’s say, behind the times. Several weeks ago, I applied for a state job. While I can look at the jobs online, oddly I can’t fill out an application online. Applicants must mail applications to blah blah blah. I was able to fill out a PDF application, print it, but it wouldn’t save. They tell you up front that it won’t save. I saved a hard copy figuring I could white-out the date and position number, then fill in the unique info by hand.
Today was the day to utilize my “smart move”. I pulled out my originals and used one of those correction tape applicators. The unfortunate thing was that the tape flaked right off the paper. I’m assuming this happened because it was probably upteen years old and the fact that it came from a dollar store probably didn’t help either. I threw out the correction tape. I rubbed off the remaining tape and smudge the ink a little in the process. So much for being neat. All for nothing. I went out to Walmart for my optical appointment. Afterwards, I picked up some Bic Wite-Out.
I got home and “wited out” as needed. Hmmmm. Maybe I should make extra copies for future use? Sure, an extra 2. I loaded the pages into the autofeed of my glorious Lexmark Pro205 (winking at Laurie) and pressed the copy button. Pages spit out and most were too light or it totally was unreadable. Damn! I guess my “copier” can’t handle the job? All for nothing.
Did I mention this was a long story?
Off to Office Depot I went. I used their self service copiers, made 3 sets for under $2 and returned home. I started filling out a copy and then realized, I really don’t like the description of my previous job duties. I need to use my updated résumé information. All for nothing. Oh well, I’ll go online and redo a new form but this time I won’t fill in any field that I’ll later need to “wite-out”.
There I am, online searching for the form. I find it. I open the PDF but can’t seem to fill anything out. I try and try. I can’t edit it. All for nothing. I go through various state websites by scratch and found they changed it. Now, you can only print it and fill it out by hand BUT a new Microsoft DOC file is listed. The DOC file can be saved on my computer! Yay! I fill out the new document. I save it! Yay again. I print. I get some typical warnings that some of you might be familiar with:
No biggy. It’s typically fine. I respond “yes”. The printer spits out 4 pages of nothingness. I might just cry. I print again. The same. I delete the application from my harddrive. All for nothing. Well wait. Maybe I should try and print something from Jim’s computer. I print. I determine it’s out of freakin’ ink. All for nothing. I restored my documents. Phew!
I take another trip. This time to OfficeMax, just to mix things up. No really, it was more because it was next to the gym. We work out. We come home. I’m chomping at the bit to install the cartridge and make sure that’s what’s wrong even though the ink monitoring system says some is left. I install it, print and hallelujah!
Our high here hit 92 degrees while Florida was cooler. We’ve been using the air conditioning of and on for the past couple of weeks. Living in a 2 story house has it disadvantages. In the winter, running the heat made it warm upstairs but often frigid downstairs. Yeah, heat rises, I’m aware. Now, with the air conditioning the thermostat downstairs shows 70 but upstairs it’s 75. We’ve been adjusting vent flow to compensate. When we buy a house, if it happens to be 2 stories, we’ll invest in independent thermostats.
We walked 6 miles roundtrip to see the Giant Sequoias in the Mariposa Grove of Yosemite. No, not uphill both ways but it sure felt like it. There’s a great video from that day’s adventure. Click here to see it. |
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go print stuff just cause I can.
Wow, what determination over printing! Any employer reading this, should give you the job just for the effort you put in.

How insanely frustrating!! But really... I guess it would be goo training for when you DO land a government job...
ReplyDeleteWe live in a bi-level so we deal with the hot upstairs thing- but it's our main living area upstairs and the living room has high ceilings and that compounds the problem. Separate thermostats... hmmm...
See, I would have quit, made myself a Margarita, and called it a day after my second failed attempt.
ReplyDeleteBut that's just me.
I'm with Alix. AND I would have kicked the GD printer.
