2-19-09 Wednesday (Rudeness)

Thanks to everyone for the prayers and well wishes. My Mom is on the road to recovery. She's still in the hospital but getting better at a slow pace. She has Clostridium Difficile Colitis which in medical world is very common. Of course I wonder, if it's so common, why wasn't it correctly diagnosed for weeks? AND it got SO severe! Could you imagine dealing with those syptoms for 8 weeks?

Meanwhile, the doctor has a lack of bedside manor. Dr. Bhanuprasad Koneru appears to look down on women. My family had the same problem with him several years ago. Long story, but basically he told my uncle never to come back to the hospital, and I chased him out as he talked down to my aunt. I wished my Mom and I would have remembered all that before he came in. The clencher the other day was when my mom asked, "Will I see you again tomorrow" to which he answered "not if you keep asking questions" and walked out. I kid you not. I had to complain about the nurses too. There's so much more to the story but I don't have the time. I spend all day at the hospital and I go visit friends late in the evening. Actually I go to both hospitals to see my uncle and Mom. If I get the chance I'll put more of the stories in.

I think Mom will be in the hospital for at least 5 days more. Hey, whatever it takes.

  1. Is there any way to get a different doctor?? Egads!! A friend of mine was in a life and death situation in a hospital and when his wife pushed and asked questions, the doctor had a SCREAMING fit at her. She arranged for her husband to be immediately transferred to a different hospital, different doctor, different team. And he started a different course of treatment, different diagnosis, and began to recover almost immediately.

    So follow your instincts...

  2. Hi, Garret.

That's unacceptable behavior from your doctor. Considering his manner and your concern about your mother's lack of treatment over the last few weeks, it might be worth your while to find someone who's a better fit. Of course I don't know your position; but even if you feel you're stuck with this guy, there must be some organization you can speak to in order to find a new doctor. They should encourage questions and not try to shut down communication. I've had a great deal of experience with doctors lately, and I never ran into this problem. Good luck, and my thoughts are with all of you.

  3. Garret - get your mother a new doctor pronto. The hospital is obliged if you feel she isn't getting the care she deserves. After that, I would file a complaint with the hospital board and site specific instances and comments Doctor Evil has made to you and your mother. He may be a brilliant physician, but his conduct is not only deplorable - it's unacceptable! You CAN and SHOULD do something about it.

You and your mother continue to be in my prayers.

  4. WOW...just, WOW...that's inexcusable. I'd go right to the Director of the hospital with that one. And get your mom the hell out of there if at all possible. Way to make a bad situation worse, Dr. K... not cool. Good luck!

  6. I think I lost my comment. Ditto what everyone is saying here. Your mom deserves respect from her doctor. He is not the god he thinks he is. Second opinion? New doc? New hospital?

  8. So glad that your mom is doing better, tactless doctor or not. Hope she continues to get better and gets back to the business of life soon. I'll throw up a couple prayers.
