8-10-09 Monday (Raid!)

image Jim and I got in some quality time with the moms.  He and his mom went out for lunch and some shopping.  I took my mom for hot wings at Hogbody’s.  I love hot wings and since Jim doesn’t, this was the best time for them.  They weren’t as good as usual.  They weren’t as meaty and a bit over cooked.  We had to send the flavorless fries back.  My mom asked for them to be well done but that seemed to have dried out the guts of the fries.  It probably wasn’t their fault.  Next time, we’ll try Hooters per her request.  I’ll give Hogbody’s another shot sometime.

After lunch, my mom and I went to purchase some Space Bags, and then stow away some extra bedding she had.  I’m not sold on these bags.  Unless they’ve made improvements, anytime Jim and I used them, 2 months later they were reinflated.  Crapity crap crap.

Let’s fast forward to dinner time.  We printed off an Entertainment.com coupon for the Arizona Pizza Company.  It’s a big chain, how can we go wrong?  We’ve never been here before.  I joked about how funny we were in Arizona and never ate here.  Anyway, we arrived, we sat down, ordered dinner and watched TV on the tableside TV’s they have.  The food hasn’t arrived but a roach walked by on the table’s dividing wall, just a foot away from us.  I exclaimed, “no way, uh uh!” and got up from the table to head for the door.  I forgot there was a huge step down from the booth and just about broke my ass trying to leave.  We spotted the hostess, took her to the table and showed her the roach as it was still walking around on the wall.  Jim asked for the manager but I kept walking saying “I don’t want to see anyone, we’re outta here.” and that was it.  Even if they had comp’d the meal, there’s no way I could eat there.

Some people have spider fears.  Some people hate snakes.  Me?  It’s about the roaches.  I just can’t.

imageOur second choice is a place we’ve been to many a time…  McGregor Food & Spirits.  We call it “Ranieri’s” because of the owner’s name.  We love the food here but decided we go later in the week.  I guess it couldn’t wait for us to come sooner so it deployed it’s Spy Roach.  Well, it worked.  We walked into MF&S and knew exactly what we wanted.  For starters, they have the best French Onion Soup.  We always order it with extra cheese.  I am telling you, the soup rocks.   Jim ordered a swiss burger.  He likes ‘em.  Me?  I get a little more complicated.  I love the Italian Combo Sang-wich.  Description: Boar’s Head Hot Cappy, Genoa Salami, Salsalito Turkey, w/ pepperoni & provolone cheese, served hot.  Toppings include lettuce, tomato, onions, roasted red peppers, black olives, & Parmesan Cheese, all drizzled w/ Italian dressing & piled high on a toasted hoagie.  It's the reason we're here...  Oh man!

Above: The Italian Combo Sang-wich is almost too big.  Half is the warm meat with cheese and the other side is the cold stuff.  It’s nearly impossible but you have to close the sandwich so everything works together.  Hell yeah, it’s gonna fall out the sides.  Trust me.  Would a fat guy lie?

The owner was camera shy.  I got a photo as he turned his head and he’d kill me if I posted it.  The cook, ran from the camera.  Damn camera shy people.  By the way, if we didn’t like the food here, I’d be polite and just not mention the place and surely not tell him the blog address.

We debated on dessert but passed.  I know, hard to believe.  Now shut up.

After I typed up this blog entry, I emailed Arizona Pizza.  I told them what happened and don’t send me a free anything as I’ll never return.  I’ll simply give it away.  I just thought that I should tell them about it though.  Ya know?

Let me tell you about what happens when you write a letter to a company:

Your letter: We ALMOST ate dinner at your Fort Myers, FL location 8-10-09.  It was my first and last visit.  We (2 of us) ordered dinner.  As we watched the tableside…

They read: blah blah blah and blah blah blah.

They press the “give a free something button” and move on to the next letter.

I recently blogged that I love Cold Stone but am unhappy with their inconsistencies.  Is it 2 scoops of peanut butter, 1 Reese’s cup or 2 Reese’s cup, etc, etc.  I wanted to know how it was supposed to be since we were traveling and I’d like to be able to have it the same way each time.  Sometimes they overdid it.  I expected my question to be answered; it wasn’t.  What I got was a free coupon in the mail.  We haven’t been back since.  You know I love it.  We’ll go back but I’ve kinda downgraded from love to like it.  Maybe I’m a picky consumer?

Miscellaneous: Fellow Bloggers, I have found some beautiful and FREE templates.  I don’t want to change mine since I like the wide text area and simple look.  Click here to browse the templates.

  1. I am with you on the Arizona Pizza - when they first opened... very good and CLEAN! Second time - OK, third time - nasty food & dirty... will never go back. Sorry you two had such a bad experience there.

  2. I've been wanting to change my blog to a 3 column one, but haven't been able to figure out how to do it. There's even a 3 column version of my own template! sigh.

Oh yuck on the roach! I don't blame you for leaving!

Yum on the French Onion soup! I had french onion today for lunch also. Well, I got to eat half of it and the sandwich was so-so that i had with it.

  4. @NancyPants: Wasn't hair on the plate, Twas cheese. I'm not sure I'll be able to plan that far ahead for Coldstone but I'll try. :-)

  5. If you go from Love It to Like It at Coldstone, it might downgrade the waistline, too! Ha! We ate at Coldstone Sunday. I went toally opposite of how I usually go (I'm with you on the chocolate and PB but I have to have the dark chocolate ice cream) and had the watermelon sorbet, no mix-ins. It was pretty tasty.

There was a buffet that we went to down there... I can't remember the name of it. But the food was awesome and the clientele was... fun to watch. It's been years since we were down there but we still make jokes about putting on our "best" clothes to go to that buffet. Crap- what's the name of it??

  7. @Liz: I need to redeem my free Cold Stone coupon before I start eating healthy! Was the buffet a chain?

@Jackie: Yes, we have some of those and I've heard of them as "Asian Cockroaches". Ewwww.

  8. Hey, guys, I'm back! My computer was picked up on 7/20 when my SIL loaded my stuff to bring it to Iowa from Atlanta - I was bereft! No internet until a few days ago! I've missed your irreverent posts, Garret.

What's this phobia about roaches? You're based in Florida, for crissake. I grew up there - had roaches for roommates. We called the huge flying ones palmetto bugs. Don't worry, I do understand - I used to have nightmares of them crawling on me. Anyway, it's good to see/read you again!

    Nancy, now in Iowa

  9. @Mom L: ::in Herman Munster tone:: I hate roaches, hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em.

Palmetto bugs. Ewwwww, yes, I hate those too! Sometimes there's flying ones called "Asian cockroaches". Whatever language they speak, I hate them.
