11-2-08 Sunday (Stranded In The Rain)

This morning started off pretty rough. Jim found the passenger front window of the Cherokee in fragments leading to a stolen GPS. We should have known better to take the GPS out especially with the kind of characters we've seen walking around here. Jim called the insurance company, we have a $250 deductible and it won't cover missing items. Sigh. We have a black cloud hanging over our head - literally. It hasn't rained here for the weeks we've been in Utah, until today - of course. We got a big trash bag from the office and covered it as best we could. Being a Sunday is the other unfortunate thing. Naturally, everything we'd need for today is closed. Glass replacement - closed. Rental car company - closed.
It's all my fault. I think it was yesterday that I said we should have gotten the more expensive GPS with more features. The good thing, is that now I'll get my wish. The bad thing is it will cost $250 (deductible) + new GPS ($300) so we'll now have a $550 GPS. I found the model I like (Garmin Nuvi 750) for the lowest price at Sam's and Costco for $300. Sam's seems to stock it, Costco doesn't. Wal-Mart was even a little cheaper but we'd have to wait until Tuesday to get it. With us being out-of-towners, a GPS seems like a necessity anymore.

We've worked out so many ways to get a rental, my head is spinning. Local rental offices are closed. Enterprise at the airport won't pick us up. Bus rides would be under 2 hours. Cab rides are $45.00. I guess it will have to be a Sunday in the hotel, with rain.

The mountain view from the hotel was interesting. The clouds seemed heavy and unable to make it over the mountains. I took a few pictures.

  1. We have felt your luck this weekend. We traveled to Chicago to get some paperwork taken care of and a little R and R. We were in Chicago less then an hour and stopped to have Lunch, parked the car, walked around a little then had Luch. When we returned to the car it had disappeared. Since I was sure it was stolen we were getting ready to call Hertz when we started talking to this guy in the parking lot. We soon realized that the car had been towed... Did we park in a no parking zone? NOOOOO. Why was it towed?? Because we stepped off the property... It didn't matter that we were back within 5 minutes, we stepped off.. so they towed while we were eating lunch inside... There are a lot of stories from this trip, but lets say, I don't see us returning to Chicago anytime soon.....

  2. Pete, I'm thinking you might have beat us out. Trying to out do our misadventures are ya? Well, 1 thing that tips the scales in our favor is that it wasn't your car.

  3. Utah=Mormons=EVERYTHING is closed on Sundays...Even the legs of the many many children mothers....Have you noticed just how big all the houses are?
I dated a guy from SLC and he committed some robbery type crime in SLC back in the 80's. When he got to court they offered him a one way ticket to wherever he wanted to go. He chose Hawaii. Thus I ended up meeting him. He was in much better shape by the time Pantz waltzed in to his life. Alas I PancyDanced out of it a few five years later. I guess when they catch the creep (fat chance) who stole your GPS he can whip it out in court and have his route not only picked out but mapped as well. Or the judge can decide. I say throw him to the Mormons. They'll load him up on anklebiters and he'll never have time to go creeping and stealing again.
Hope my deciding to start dropping notes and such on here has not brought bad sad luck your way....still LOVE you anyway...hope it's just a tad mutual..now I'm real worried...Aloha..

  5. Sonia, on the left side bar you'll see a place to click and bring up our travel calendar. Depending on the timeline for the RV repairs, we'll be going to Boise, Idaho next.
