1-6-09 Tuesday (Running Water is Hard to Catch)

Jim's blog contribution:
I took Dasher for a walk this morning. It was 45 degrees outside this morning. While this is not warm by Florida standards, at home this would be cause to break out the long johns, sweaters and leather jacket, it felt great. Let me explain just how great 45 degrees is at this point. That is over 20 degrees above the temperature where shit freezes. I am so sick of stuff freezing. Snow and ice and sleet and freezing rain, I have had enough. It also means that while I am walking the dog, he is not shivering like a pathetic fool, I and not wanting him to hurry so I can go inside, my hand does not get painfully cold from holding the leash, my ears do not hurt and my cheeks do not hurt from cold exposure. 45 degrees is great and when we got back from the walk it was 46 degrees. It is going to be a great day. I STILL WANT A CIGARETTE!

Let's give a round of applause for Jim! We've decided to go ahead and see some of the redwoods today. Yeah, it's raining but hopefully that will just be spotty today. The forecast shows rain all week so there's no point in trying to wait for it to clear up. I guess the giant-drive-through-the-redwoods are further south of here. We'll see the smaller section today, and tomorrow we'll move the RV further south to see the rest of it. We were planning to go south anyway.

I'm happy to report that this campground "Hiouchi RV Resort" is in a valley. Maybe a valley. Whatever it is, the surroundings are pretty. It doesn't look like sun gets here that well to begin with because of the mountains and huge amount of tall trees. Things are covered with thick green moss. It's pretty.

Wow, we took an amazing drive today. Along side the Smith River and through the Redwood National Park was amazing. Did I mention amazing? It was like being in a rain forest. The constant drizzle, with fog, along with dense foliage made for perfection. Ferns and moss all over the place. Redwoods so huge, pictures don't do it justice. Hopefully the videos show it all better. After the amazing redwood drive it was time for lunch. Jim had planned out lunch at some place on a pier where we could watch sea lions. The place was closed for the season. It was odd that it was decorated for Christmas though. Hmmmm. Anyway, we saw the sea lions in the water. It was so cute. We drove to another point of the pier that was a little closer to them.

Tomorrow we'll move on a little further south. 2 hours further. Jim is still looking into some campgrounds. We might just wing it.

We walked the dog earlier and heard water running. On closer inspection, we found a small stream or brook or whatever flowing aside the RV park. The park has several sites right at the stream. I still cannot understand why these places group everyone together and then seeing prime spots empty annoys me. We're leaving tomorrow so I guess it doesn't matter much now. Maybe the next park we'll circle around the park before we check into the office and then we can request different sites.

  1. We went through the redwoods in April 2007 on our way to pick our coach in Oregon. I was amazed at the size of the trees.

What bothered me was seeing the large branches laying on the ground. If one was to fall from a tree we would have been flattened like a squashed bug.

The trees were HUGE! Amazing that they can grow so big. We drove our Honda CR-V through one of the trees..... corny I know, but we were tourists! LOL!

  2. Thanks! Them are the treees I wanted to see! When I was a kid, long ago, I saw a 40' redwood trunk, hollowed out and made into a Mobile Home. It was neat! Wonder what happened to that........

  5. Sometime today (Wednesday), we'll get to see the BIG ass tree that we can drive through.

@Tim: Jim says Garret is a bastard for taking/posting the picture and you're one for pointing it out.

  6. Gorgeous photos. I love coming along with you and Jim on this wonderful adventure. I wouldn't do particularly well in prolonged cold, but the icy snowy photos were just as lovely. Glad you finally made it to California all safe and sound.
