1-10-09 Saturday (Hair For Flowers?)

We've arrived in San Leandro (very close to San Francisco) and are staying at an RV park named SanDev. We're here just a week after John & Derek, who recommended this place, left. Kind of depressing in a way. Actually, if I knew them better, I'd feel comfortable in telling them that they suck. Maybe throw in a touch of "ruined our lives". Since we've never actually met, I won't mention anything like that.

The drive here was OK until we started getting near the San Francisco hub. At that point the roads seemed to intertwine that from outer space, one would expect it to look like a basket weave. It was merge, exit, keep left, do this, do that. With Jim's driving skills and my backseat driving skills, with a little shouting "No over there!" we arrived alive.

We arrived at the campground. The park is nice enough but there's railroad tracks right behind our site. I can actually see the tracks! What the hell is with airports, highways, and train tracks lately? Does this part of the US categorize trailer trash with the aforementioned items? After setting up camp here at site #34, we decided to take a ride to the Golden Gate Bridge. Man, there are some long ass bridges around here with high ass tolls. Anyway, over the Bay bridge we went then eventually over the Golden Gate bridge. The Golden Gate provided a Vista viewing area that was great. We've seen all of this at night and it will be interesting to see it all again in the daylight.

We drove to the Castro District which is a very large gay/lesbian area. Bars, shopping, restaurants and the like. We never got out of the Jeep; parking was near impossible. Aside from the lack of parking, we didn't really know where we were going. We just wanted to get out a little but next time we venture into the city it will probably be via public transportation combined with a plan. We'll need to figure it out versus driving.

  3. Jim and Garrett--

I've seen the link to your blog on Eternal Lizdom for awhile and finally decided to check it out. I LOVED the video. Loved it.

I've read the background story of your trip, but I'd like to really get back to the first day of traveling and read from there. I don't find a chronological listing of posts on your site...

    A fellow US traveler--

  5. Nice pictures! Jim, I am sooo proud of you driving that "rig" on those roads and traffic. I just saw a short film yesterday about an Old Style Barber Shop in the Castro. Maybe ya all can get a haircut there. The movie said it is a favorite place of gays and Lesbians.

  7. Hey guys... unless y'all are looking for the nearest WalMart I have some touristy info on SF. We went when J. got back from Baghdad. He was a fireman there for years so he took me to his favorite places. We drove around in SF near the piers? On Motorcycles! All that traffic and he drove right between the cars and it freaked me out a little.

If you don't already have in itenerary, I think the Silverado trail is nice. It was exceptionally beautiful scenery.

Also my favorite wine spot was Clos Du Val: http://www.closduval.com/

and the persian one (I can't ever remember the name of) Darioush had the best pistachios on earth. The wine was good too. Domaine Chandon had a beautiful wine tasting room and outdoor sculptures and a little grapevine informational garden. I liked wandering around half drunk looking at the grapes.
